Spending time in nature has long been associated with improved mental and emotional health.

For older adults who may face mobility challenges or live in environments with limited access to green spaces, virtual reality (VR) technology offers a promising new way to experience the benefits of nature from the comfort of home or care settings.

The Emotional Benefits of Nature Experiences

Even brief doses of nature are linked with better mental health. Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health reports that about 15 minutes in green space can improve symptoms across anxiety, depression, and vitality.

Natural settings help shift the body out of a stress response. People often see lower heart rate and blood pressure and feel more relaxed after time in nature.

But some older adults have limited mobility, frail bodies, or safety issues that don't allow them to fully immerse in nature.

VR natures experiences allow them to safely replicate the calming and restorative effects of spending time outdoors.

Experiencing Nature In VR

Virtual reality technology creates immersive, interactive environments that simulate natural settings in vivid detail. It's also offers a controlled, customizable environment that avoids outdoor safety risks.

New research from Texas A&M adds a helpful real-world example. In a small pilot with residents who had mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease, nature-themed VR sessions twice a week for five weeks were linked with more pleasure and alertness and with less anxiety and sadness. Participants also reported higher quality of life.

This is evidence that VR can trigger positive emotional responses similar to those experienced in real environments.

Virtual Reality At Home

If your loved one has significant eye problems, balance issues, a seizure history, or medical conditions, talk with a clinician first to confirm that VR is appropriate and to tailor the plan. Make sure the area they will use the VR in is safe by choosing a sturdy chair with armrests, clearing the floor of clutter, fitting the head strap snugly, and keeping bright room lighting so you can monitor the experience. It's also important to watch for motion sensitivity. Headaches, dizziness, or nausea can occur, especially with fast-moving visuals or longer exposures. If symptoms appear, stop the session immediately. While virtual reality offers a valuable way to experience nature when outdoor access is limited, it is not a substitute for spending time in real green spaces whenever it is safe and feasible to do so.
