Wrist Arthritis The wrist is made up of many small bones that work together to allow movement for everyday tasks like gripping, lifting, and turning objects.
Healthy wrists have a smooth layer of cartilage that allows bones to move easily and without friction.
With arthritis, this cartilage gradually wears down.
As it breaks away, the bones begin to rub against each other, leading to pain and stiffness.
The three most common types of arthritis that affect the wrist are osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, and inflammatory arthritis.

Managing Symptoms with Paraffin Wax Bath
While there is no cure for arthritis, there are ways to help your care recipient manage symptoms and stay comfortable.
One option is a paraffin wax bath, a gentle heat treatment that can relieve pain and stiffness.
The warm wax fully coats the hand, delivering deep, soothing heat to the affected area.
A paraffin wax machine is used to melt and hold the wax at the right temperature. The heat from the wax can loosen the joints, reduce joint stiffness, and increase flexibility. You can ask your healthcare provider for recommendations, or look for options available on Amazon like the ones below.

Tips for Caregivers
Use before hand and wrist exercises to help loosen the joints
Apply a light lotion beforehand to make the wax easier to remove
After dipping, cover the hand with a plastic bag and wrap it with a towel
Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes, then remove the towel, bag, and cooled wax
Reminders for Caregivers
If your care recipient has severe pain, consult a healthcare professional.
Do not use if they have open wounds, cuts, or reduced sensation in the hands.
Do not us if there is an injury or inflammation, as the increased blood flow may worsen swelling.
This does not replace medical advice. It is simply a way to help ease wrist pain.
Always check that the wax is not too hot before use. There isn’t one perfect temperature for heat therapy, so choose what feels comfortable. A good guideline is to keep your shower between 92 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit (33.3 to 37.7 degrees Celsius).
