In today’s digital world, it's important for older adults to stay connected with family, friends, healthcare providers, and emergency services.

Fortunately, the Lifeline Program offers monthly discounts on phone or internet service for eligible low-income individuals, including older adults.

What Is Lifeline?

Lifeline is a government-supported program that offers discounts on phone and broadband internet services to eligible low-income consumers.

The goal is to ensure affordable access to essential communication tools, which can enhance safety, social connection, and access to health resources.

Lifeline provides a monthly discount, typically up to $9.25, on landline, cellphone, or internet bills. For those living on Tribal lands, Lifeline offers additional benefits.

Who Is Eligible And How Can Someone Apply?

You may qualify for Lifeline based on income or participation in certain government assistance programs.

Why the Lifeline Program Matters for Low-Income Older Adults

Older adults, particularly those on fixed incomes or with limited access to transportation, can gain multiple benefits from Lifeline. Combating Social Isolation

1 in 3 of older adults in the U.S. experience social isolation, which is linked to poorer physical and mental health. Lifeline helps seniors stay in regular contact with family, friends, neighbors, and caregivers through affordable phone and internet access, reducing feelings of loneliness and promoting emotional well-being Accessing Healthcare

Telehealth has become an important tool for older adults to manage chronic conditions, access specialist care, and receive timely health advice. Lifeline lowers the cost barrier to internet access, enabling older adults to use video consultations, online pharmacy services, and remote monitoring devices without high expenses Increasing Safety Reliable phone service can be a lifesaver in emergencies, allowing older adults to call 911 or communicate quickly during natural disasters, accidents, or acute medical problems

Staying Informed and Independent

With affordable connectivity, older adults can stay informed about community programs, social services, nutrition, transportation, and more, helping them maintain independence.

In today’s digital world, communication is more than just a way to stay in touch; it’s a vital lifeline for health, safety, and well-being. The Lifeline Program can significantly improve an older adult's ability to access healthcare, stay socially engaged, and maintain independence by reducing the cost of essential phone or internet services.
