September Awareness Events for Older Adults and Caregivers

September is filled with awareness events that shine a light on aging, caregiving, safety, connection, and quality of life.

These observances offer more than an opportunity to raise awareness. They’re a chance to start conversations and share helpful resources.

Healthy Aging Month

Healthy Aging Month runs throughout September and focuses on the physical, social, and mental habits that can support well-being as we age.

For caregivers, September can be a good reminder to consider their own health, too.

National Senior Center Month

September is also National Senior Center Month, an opportunity to recognize the important role senior centers play in communities.

The National Council on Aging's theme is , "Happier Birthdays Happen Here," highlights how senior centers can foster connection, purpose, and resilience among older adults.

Falls Prevention Awareness Month

Falls Prevention Awareness Month encourages older adults, families, and caregivers to think proactively about safety and independence.

Assisted Living Week: September 7–13

From September 7–13, 2026, communities across the country will recognize Assisted Living Week, celebrating the staff, residents, families, and communities that make assisted living environments feel like home.

It's an opportunity to recognize the people who provide care and support every day and the relationships that develop between caregivers and the older adults they serve.

World Alzheimer's Month

September is also World Alzheimer's Month, with World Alzheimer's Day on September 21.

This global observance brings attention to Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia while highlighting the experiences of people living with dementia and the people who care for them.

For family caregivers in particular, this can be an important time to talk about the realities of caregiving including stress, isolation, uncertainty, and the need for support.
