Optimism Can Reduce The Risk of Dementia

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that higher levels of optimism were associated with a lower risk of developing dementia.
Researchers suggest this may be because people who are more optimistic tend to engage in behaviors that support brain health.
These include staying physically active, maintaining social connections, managing stress, and participating in mentally stimulating activities.

What This Means for Caregivers
If your care recipient has risk factors for dementia, such as age, family history, or certain long-term health conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, depression) you can help your care recipient to become more optimistic.
But It's important to remember that the research suggests it may help reduce the risk, but it doesn't guarantee prevention of dementia.
Factors such as age and genetics still play a significant role.
Still, encouraging optimism has its benefits and can make it worthwhile to practice.
You can try some of the activities below.
1. Reflect on what went well
At the end of each day, invite them to write down two things that went well. Then ask a follow-up question: How did I help make this happen?
This small shift can help them focus in the positive moments in their lives.
2. Take “savor walks” together
Spend about 20 minutes walking together, focusing on what is pleasant or interesting in the moment.
It could be the weather, a conversation, or something you notice along the way.
This practice helps bring attention to the present instead of worries about the past or future.
3. Keep a gratitude journal
Once a week, encourage them to write down five things they are thankful for.
Over time, this can help shift attention toward what is still meaningful and good in their life.
