Older Adults Are Putting Their Time Where Their Heart Is

August 21 is recognized as National Senior Citizens Day, a day to recognize and celebrate the contributions of older adults and the important role they continue to play in their families, workplaces, and communities.

One contribution that often deserves more attention is volunteering.

Older Adults Are Giving More of Their Time

An analysis of volunteer data by NationSwell found that the share of total volunteer hours accounted for by people 65 and older increased substantially between 2002 and 2021.

In 2002, people 65 and older accounted for 18.5% of all volunteer hours.

By 2021, that share had risen to 28.6%.

The increase is particularly notable because it continued during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period when older adults faced significantly elevated health risks from the virus.

Despite those challenges, older volunteers continued to contribute their time and skills.

In addition, more than one in five volunteer hours contributed by people 65 and older in 2021 came from someone who was also working or looking for work.

This means volunteering remains part of life for many older adults, including those still in the workforce.

This National Senior Citizens Day, it's worth taking a moment to recognize the older adults who continue to give their time, experience, and energy to the people and communities around them.
