Today is National Caregivers Day, a time to recognize and appreciate the millions of caregivers across the country who dedicate their time, energy, and love to supporting others. Their contributions often go unnoticed, but their impact is life-changing.

This year, let’s take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices caregivers make and why we should take the time to honor them

The Sacrifices Caregivers Make Balancing Work and Caregiving

Caregivers often juggle multiple responsibilities. In the U.S., nearly 48 million family caregivers provide unpaid care, and 61% also have jobs—managing work while tending to the needs of their loved ones. This balancing act can be overwhelming, leaving little time for personal well-being. The Hours They Give

Caregiving is a major time commitment. On average, family caregivers spend 24.4 hours per week providing care, and 1 in 4 spends over 41 hours a week—the equivalent of a typical full-time job. Giving Up Education and Opportunities

Caregiving also affects young people. An estimated 2.6 million young adults, ages 15 to 22, are caregivers. Many spend less time on schoolwork or even drop out, affecting their future opportunities. The Financial Burden Caregiving comes with significant out-of-pocket expenses. The typical caregiver spends more than $7,000 per year on costs related to their caregiving duties. Many cover medical expenses, home modifications, and daily necessities for their loved ones, often sacrificing their own financial stability.

The Physical and Emotional Toll In addition to these sacrifices, caregivers often experience physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion.

According to a survey by AARP, 4 in 10 caregivers (out of 1,101 participants) report rarely or never feeling relaxed.

Many caregivers struggle with stress, burnout, and declining health as they prioritize the needs of others.

Showing Our Appreciation Take a moment today to reach out to the caregivers in your life—whether it's with a simple phone call, a kind message, or a small token of appreciation. These small gestures can mean the world to those who give so much of themselves to others. Let’s honor them not just today, but every day, for their selfless commitment and the profound difference they make.
