Holiday Fall Prevention Checklist for Older Adults and Caregivers

Holiday decorations, rearranged furniture, extra visitors, pets, and busier routines can all create fall hazards. This applies whether an older adult is hosting guests at home or visiting someone else’s home for the holidays. Caregivers and older adults can use this checklist as a guide to help reduce fall risks and keep holiday gatherings safer for everyone.

Outside the Home

Walkways, driveways, and steps should be cleared of ice, snow, wet leaves, or debris that could cause slipping. Handrails on steps should feel sturdy and secure. Holiday schedules often mean coming and going after dark, so exterior lighting should be bright enough to clearly see paths and steps, especially in the early evening. If outdoor activities are planned, make sure older adults wear proper footwear to reduce the risk of slipping.

Inside the Home

Holiday decorations and extra furniture can change familiar walking paths. Caregivers can walk through the home as if you were a guest and notice anything that might create a tripping hazard.

Stairways

Check that there are no shoes, gift bags, decorations, or boxes left on the steps. Look for uneven or broken steps and make sure carpeting is secure and not loose or torn.

Lighting should work at both the top and bottom of the stairs, with easy-to-reach light switches. Handrails should be secure and easy to grip on at least one side, and ideally both.

Living Area

Living rooms and gathering spaces often get rearranged for the holidays.

Make sure there is a clear walking path around furniture and that cords from lights, lamps, or decorations are not stretched across walkways.

Throw rugs can easily slide, especially with increased foot traffic, so consider removing them or securing them firmly.

Pets can also be a tripping hazard during busy gatherings. Keeping them in another room or under supervision can help prevent accidents. If balance is a concern, it can be safer to sit down before greeting excited children or pets.

When decorating, avoid reaching high areas alone. Have someone assist you when using a ladder or step stool, or consider skipping decorations placed above shoulder height altogether and asking for help instead.

Kitchen

Holiday cooking can create clutter and spills. Any spills should be cleaned up immediately to prevent slipping. Keep frequently used items within easy reach so there is no need to climb or stretch. If a step stool is necessary, it should be sturdy and placed on a stable surface. Whenever possible, it is safer to ask for help rather than risk a fall. Bedroom

Check that it is easy to reach a light switch from the bed.

The path from the bed to the bathroom should be clear of clutter and well-lit, especially if guests are staying overnight.

Bathroom

Make sure tubs and showers are not slippery and that non-slip mats or decals are in place.

Grab bars near the toilet and inside the tub or shower can provide important support. A night light can make trips to the bathroom safer after dark. If additional help is needed with bathing or using the toilet, plan for that support ahead of time. Additional Holiday Safety Tips

Some medications can affect blood pressure and balance, making dizziness more likely when standing up. Encourage older adults to move slowly from sitting to standing, and make sure walkers or canes are nearby and easy to access.

Alcohol can also interact with medications and increase fall risk. It is best to severely limit or complete avoid alcohol intake during holiday celebrations can help reduce accidents.
