Supporting Older Adults to Cycle Safely

Staying active is one of the most important ways to maintain health and mobility as we age. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.


Cycling is an excellent option for older adults because it provides a low-impact, joint-friendly workout while also improving heart health, muscle strength, and mental well-being.


What are risks of cycling?


While cycling is a fantastic way to stay active, it’s important to be aware of potential risks. According to data, adults aged 55-69 have the highest bicycle-related death rates. Additionally, about one-third of fatal cycling accidents involve alcohol—either from the motorist or the cyclist. There is also the risk of falling while riding your bike. But with the right precautions, cycling can be a safe and enjoyable way to stay healthy.

How Caregivers Can Support Older Adults in Cycling While cycling is a fantastic way to stay active, some older adults may have concerns about safety, mobility, or confidence in their ability to ride. Caregivers can help address these concerns and create a positive cycling experience. Help Choose the Right Bike

Not all bikes are the same, and finding the right one can make cycling safer and more enjoyable. Caregivers can research different bike types and help select one that best fits the older adult’s needs:

🚲 Step-through bikes – These have a lower center bar, making it easier to get on and off.


🚴‍♂️ Adult tricycles – Three wheels mean more stability, which is great if balance is a concern.

🚴‍♀️ Recumbent bikes – These provide a reclined position for extra back support

Find a Safe Place to Ride


Helping an older adult find a comfortable and safe place to cycle is essential. Caregivers can:


  • Research protected bike lanes or dedicated cycling trails in the community


  • Check with local parks departments or cycling clubs for bike-friendly routes


  • Encourage cycling in low-traffic areas or designated senior-friendly zones

Encourage the Use of Safety Gear


Wearing proper safety gear is crucial. Caregivers can assist by ensuring the older adult has:

  • Practice riding in safe, low-traffic areas first


  • Encourage group rides with others for added confidence and companionship


Consider Indoor Cycling

If road safety is a concern, caregivers can introduce indoor cycling options. Stationary bikes or spin classes offer the same health benefits in a controlled environment, making them a great year-round option. Cycling is gentle on the joints because it is not a weight-bearing exercise. The rhythmic motion of pedaling helps circulate synovial fluid—a lubricant in the joints that reduces friction, easing movement and stiffness.
