Strong ankles play a crucial role in maintaining mobility and independence as we age. Ankles absorb impact with every step, which leads to wear and tear over time, especially in older adults who may be less active or have underlying conditions like arthritis. Weak ankles can cause:

  • Poor balance, which increases the risk of falling

  • Foot pain, due to instability or overcompensation by other muscles

  • Sprains, especially from sudden twists or missteps on uneven surfaces

But there’s good news: one of the easiest ways to protect your ankles, improve stability, and reduce the risk of foot pain and sprains is a simple daily movement known as the alphabet foot exercise.

ree

How It Works The alphabet foot exercise is a low-impact movement that strengthens and stabilizes the ankle joint. It activates small muscles around the ankle that support movement in every direction: up, down, inward, and outward. You can do this seated, lying down, or standing with support,  making it adaptable for all fitness levels. 1. Sit in a chair or lie down with your legs extended. If standing, hold onto a sturdy chair or counter. 2. Extend one leg and imagine your big toe is a pencil. 3. Slowly and gently “draw” each letter of the alphabet in the air with your toe, moving from A to Z. Keep the motion isolated to your ankle and  try not to move your whole leg. 4. Switch to the other foot and repeat the full alphabet. 5. Then go back to your first foot and do the alphabet a second time.6. Repeat once more with the second foot.

This goal is to complete the alphabet twice on each foot, once a day.

Tips for Success

  • Go slow: Move through the letters at a relaxed pace. Speed is less important than control.

  • Start small: If you feel fatigued, begin with just A–M, then build up to the full alphabet.

  • Be consistent: Daily practice brings the best results over time.

  • Pair it with other balance exercises: Add simple moves like standing on one foot or heel-to-toe walking.

  • Consult your doctor: If you’ve had recent surgery, a fall, or ankle instability, check with your physician or physical therapist before starting.

  • Keep it fun: You can also make the exercise more enjoyable by "writing" the names of your loved ones in the air with your foot.
